Scope

What's included

  • Chimney taken down brick by brick, by hand, with the house protected
  • Flue liners, cap and flashing removed with the brick
  • Floors, walls and furniture covered, with dust contained to the work area
  • All brick, mortar and rubble hauled away the same visit
  • Roof or floor openings left clean and ready for your roofer or carpenter

Above the roofline or all the way down

Taking the chimney down above the roof is the common, cheaper choice. It stops the leaks and the crumbling brick, and the part inside the house stays. You keep the corner or closet it passes through, but you do not get the floor space back.

Removing it all the way down takes the stack through the roof, every floor and into the basement. You get the space back, but there are openings in the roof, floors and ceilings that a roofer and carpenter then close. We look at it and tell you which makes sense for what you plan to do.

Toronto houses and the chimneys in them

In the old city, Victorian and Edwardian semis often have brick chimneys built into the wall you share with the neighbour. These need care: we take down our side only, protect the shared wall and keep the neighbour informed. A chimney tied into a party wall is not a quick teardown.

The 1920s to 1950s bungalows and the post-war two-storeys across Toronto usually have a single stack in the middle of the house, serving a furnace, a water heater or a fireplace. Older brick can be soft and the mortar crumbly, so we take it down in small sections rather than knocking it over.

What vents through the chimney first

If a furnace or water heater vents through your chimney, it must be re-vented by an HVAC contractor before we remove anything. Gas appliances and gas lines are handled by a licensed gas trade only. We do not touch them.

Tell us at the quote what is connected. We schedule our day after the new venting is in and signed off by the trades involved, so nothing is left venting into a space that is coming apart.

The roof opening and your roofer

Once the chimney is gone there is an opening in the roof deck. We do not do roofing. Your roofer closes it and makes it weather-tight. The best plan is to book the roofer for the same day or the next, and we work around their schedule so the opening is never left exposed to rain.

On permits, removing only the part above the roof usually does not need one, but taking out a full chimney tied into the structure may. The owner confirms with Toronto Building. We do not file permits.

Across the city

We take chimney jobs across Toronto from our Thornhill base, from the Annex and Leslieville semis to North York and Scarborough bungalows. Photos of the chimney from the yard and from the rooms it passes through are usually enough for a written quote. More on how we work is on our Toronto service area page.

Chimney Removal in Toronto FAQs

How much does chimney removal cost in Toronto?

Above the roofline typically runs $800–$2,000. Full removal through one storey is $2,000–$4,500, and through two storeys to the basement $4,000–$8,000. Hauling the brick and rubble is included. See chimney removal for the full price table.

Do I need a permit?

Taking down only the part above the roof usually does not need one. A full chimney tied into the structure may. The owner confirms the requirements with Toronto Building. We do not file permits.

My semi shares a chimney with the neighbour. Can it come out?

Often yes, but it needs care. We take down the part on your side, protect the shared wall and let the neighbour know the schedule. We check how it is built at the quote and say so if the shared structure needs a carpenter or engineer first.

My furnace vents through the chimney. What now?

An HVAC contractor re-vents the furnace or water heater first. A licensed gas trade handles any gas work. We start only after the new venting is in.

What about the hole in my roof?

Your roofer closes the opening and makes it weather-tight. We coordinate the timing so it is not left open, ideally the same day or the next.

Can you take out the fireplace too?

Yes. The fireplace and chimney are one system, so we can remove the firebox, hearth and brick in the same job. Tell us at the quote so it is priced in. Any opening in walls or flooring beyond that falls under interior demolition.
