Deck Removal in Toronto

From our Thornhill base we handle deck removal Toronto homeowners need before a rebuild, a new patio or a cleared yard. The whole deck comes down, the debris leaves in one haul, and the ground is raked level. Deck demolition in Toronto is mostly an access puzzle, so we plan the route before we bring a tool.

Scope

What's included

  • Full teardown of boards, framing, railings, and stairs
  • Posts pulled and concrete footings dug out where needed
  • All lumber, hardware, and concrete hauled away
  • Metal and clean wood sorted for recycling where loads allow
  • Ground raked level and left ready for sod, patio, or rebuild

What comes out when a deck goes

A deck is more than the boards you walk on. Under the surface are joists and beams, and around it are railings and stairs. Below the frost line, the posts sit on footings or in concrete. We take the whole structure apart in that order: boards and railings first, then framing, then stairs.

Posts and footings are the last step. If the deck is attached to your house, we detach it from the wall cleanly and leave the ledger area clear so a carpenter can patch and seal it. Anything that needs a carpenter's attention, we point out before we leave.

Toronto yards: narrow sides, shared drives and laneways

Many Toronto backyards can only be reached by a narrow side path between two houses, or through a driveway shared with the neighbour. On those lots a truck cannot back up to the deck, so the lumber is carried out by hand and loaded at the front. We plan that carry first, because it sets the crew size and the time.

Laneway lots are easier in one way: the bin can sit right at the back fence. Older decks are often built over an old concrete pad or a poured step, which changes the footings conversation. If a slab is under the boards, tell us and we will price it as a separate line so the choice stays with you.

Footings: pull them or cut them at grade

You have two options for what is left in the ground. We can dig each footing out and backfill the hole, which leaves clear ground for a patio, a new deck in a different spot or a lawn. Or we can cut the posts off at grade and leave the concrete buried, which costs less and works if nothing will be built there.

If you are rebuilding on the same footprint and the footings are sound, say so. Sometimes they can stay. The right answer depends on what goes back, and we will do the least you need.

Sorted disposal: treated wood is not clean wood

Pressure-treated lumber, which most decks are built from, is not recycled with clean wood. It goes to proper disposal. Untreated lumber can be diverted, metal hardware and railings go to scrap, and concrete footings go to aggregate recycling. We sort on site so the load goes to the right place, and the cost is part of your single written quote.

Across the city: Toronto, North York and Scarborough

We take deck jobs across Toronto, from older North York streets where backyards are deep and side gates are tight, to Scarborough lots with more machine room. See our North York and Scarborough pages for how access differs by area. Photos of the deck, the side path and the gate are usually enough to quote.

Deck Removal in Toronto FAQs

How much does deck removal cost in Toronto?

A small to mid-size ground-level deck typically runs $500–$1,500, and a large, raised or multi-level deck $1,500–$3,500. Digging out concrete footings adds roughly $40–$120 each. See deck and fence removal for the full price table.

Do I need a permit to remove a deck?

Removal itself often does not need one, but rules vary and the replacement deck may need approval depending on its size, height and attachment. The owner or builder confirms the requirements with the City of Toronto before demolition is scheduled. We do not file permits.

Can you work in a yard with only a narrow side path?

Yes. We carry the material out by hand and load at the front of the house, and we protect the path, gate and any neighbour fence along the route. Hand-hauling adds crew time, so we price the access in the written quote.

Do you remove the footings?

If you want clear ground, yes. We dig each footing out and backfill the hole. If nothing is going in that spot, we can cut the posts at grade and leave the concrete buried, which costs less.

How long does it take?

Most deck removals are a one-day job. A large raised deck with heavy framing or many footings can run into a second day, mostly because of the digging and the haul-away volume.

What happens to the old wood?

Pressure-treated lumber goes to proper disposal, not clean-wood recycling. Untreated wood, metal and concrete are sorted and sent to recycling where the loads allow.
